The apartment where we stayed in Zermatt, Appartementhaus Monazit, is a bit of a walk from the train station—whether you’re dragging your luggage from the station or heading back to catch the cable car, it takes about ten minutes on foot. But staying here has one major advantage: Appartementhaus Monazit is right next to the famous sunrise-viewing spot in Zermatt, a bridge that spans the Matter Vispa River. This bridge is near the Catholic church, and every morning you can see the golden-hued Matterhorn bathed in the sunrise light. The “Golden Matterhorn” is one of the must-see sights when visiting the mountain, and staying at Appartementhaus Monazit means you can sleep in a bit and just head out when the sunrise is about to begin—super convenient.

My room had a direct view of this bridge, and when I peeked out around six in the morning, I could already see plenty of people standing on the bridge waiting for the sunrise. Still half-asleep, I slowly got dressed and shuffled over to the bridge in my slippers—it was just a one-minute walk away.

Almost everyone on the bridge was Japanese—I briefly thought I had been teleported back to Japan.

As the sunlight gradually emerged, the Matterhorn’s colors slowly shifted.

Behold, the Golden Triangle chocolate moment.

In person, the color change doesn’t seem all that dramatic, but when I later sorted through the photos and lined them up, I realized just how significant the difference in hues is between before and after sunrise.
The stunning Golden Matterhorn is an unmissable sight you simply must witness when visiting Zermatt.
