Nxai Pan National Park is part of the larger Makgadikgadi Pans complex ecosystem in Botswana, covering an area of 2,100 square kilometers. The Makgadikgadi Pans consist of three main parts: Nxai Pan National Park, Kgama-Kgama Pan, and Kudiakam Pan. Nowadays, the Makgadikgadi Pans are covered with vast grasslands and scattered acacia trees, while during the rainy season, they feature small seasonal pans that provide vital water sources for wildlife.

Wildlife viewing in Nxai Pan National Park is seasonal, largely depending on whether there has been rainfall in the area — a time when large numbers of animals migrate here. There are also some artificial waterholes to support wildlife drinking needs. If rainfall is abundant, the best time to visit is from December to April each year. Common wildlife sightings include zebras, wildebeest, springbok, impala, roan antelope, sable antelope, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas, bat-eared foxes, elephants, and buffalo. Nxai Pan National Park is the most easily accessible park in the Makgadikgadi Pans region for visitors, located just 50 kilometers from the Nata-Maun Road.
