Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a large wildlife reserve in southern Africa and the first transnational park on the entire African continent. It consists of South Africa’s Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and the adjacent Gemsbok National Park in Botswana. The park spans a total area of 37,000 square kilometers, with three-quarters located in Botswana and one-quarter in South Africa.

Most of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park lies in the southern part of the Kalahari Desert. It primarily consists of red sand dunes, sparse vegetation, a few trees, and the dry riverbeds of the Nossob and Auob rivers. It is said that these rivers flow only once every century, yet underground water sources sustain the grasslands and camel thorn plants along the riverbeds. After heavy rains, the rivers may briefly hold water, often attracting herds of wildlife to drink.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is home to a vast and diverse array of wildlife, including large mammalian predators such as Kalahari lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas, as well as herbivores like blue wildebeest, springbok, hartebeest, and the seasonal migratory red hartebeest. Additionally, over 200 species of birds can be spotted in the park, with common ones including vultures, birds of prey, and secretarybirds.
