Established in 1971, Khutse Game Reserve — where "Khutse" means a place where you can kneel to drink water — is the second oldest wildlife reserve in Botswana.

Thanks to its closeness to Botswana’s capital, Gaborone, and the very convenient access, Khutse Game Reserve is highly favored by both locals and visitors from other regions. It is a 240-kilometer drive from Gaborone, and along the way, you can see many interesting Kalahari villages as well as the gateway to the Kalahari Desert — Molepolole.

Khutse Game Reserve neighbors the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, and the two reserves are not separated by fences but are connected. Covering an area of 2,500 square kilometers, Khutse Game Reserve features a variety of landscapes including grasslands, riverbeds, fossilized sand dunes, and plains or bare basins covered with grass. There are picturesque small basins where wildlife often gathers, especially during the rainy season when water is abundant. Commonly spotted wildlife includes giraffes, hartebeests, red hartebeests, gemsboks, roan antelopes, springboks, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs.
