Sabratha Archaeological Site

The Sabratha Archaeological Site is located 60 kilometers east of Tripoli, the port city of Libya. It was a Phoenician trading post and an outlet for exporting goods from the African interior. The main structures in Sabratha were mostly built between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, when the city reached its peak. The seaside theater is the masterpiece among these buildings. It has three tiers, each supported by massive columns, and is adorned with white and pink marble reliefs.

Today, the theater has been restored by Italian archaeologists and hosts grand cultural performances every summer. However, over time, the pink sandstone walls of the theater have suffered significant natural damage, particularly from wind erosion caused by sea breezes and waves. Some parts of the theater often require on-site, temporary reinforcement. Coastal buildings have gradually eroded due to the sea and eventually disappeared. A large number of artifacts have been unearthed during the archaeological excavations at Sabratha, including Byzantine mosaics, ancient Roman sculptures, and ancient Phoenician ruins.
