Stari Ras and Sopoćani Monastery

Stari Ras and Sopoćani Monastery were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. Located on the eastern side of the Morava River in eastern Serbia, Stari Ras was once the first capital of Serbia. In the suburbs of Stari Ras lies a group of remarkable medieval buildings — castles, churches, and monasteries. Among them, Sopoćani Monastery is the finest example of the fusion between Western and Byzantine civilizations.

The frescoes of Sopoćani Monastery were painted in 1265 in the secular Byzantine tradition, with a distinct neoclassical inclination. The subjects depicted in the monastery's frescoes are remarkably diverse: there are scenes from the life of Jesus, processions carrying holy icons and crosses, as well as portrayals of the lives of various historical figures. The compositions are grand, with balanced arrangements of figures, and the extensive use of color and expressive techniques are unmatched by contemporary European art. Foremost among them are the frescoes in the Church of the Holy Trinity within the monastery, which are recognized as the most proud achievement of Serbian fresco art.
