Republic Square

Republic Square is one of the most prominent urban squares in Serbia. Nearby, there are many of the most well-known public buildings, including the National Museum of Serbia, the National Theatre, and the bronze statue of Prince Michael. Many people regard Republic Square as the center of the nation. The square connects westward via Vasina Street to Kalemegdan Park and via Sremska Street to Novi Beograd.

The bronze statue of Prince Michael was placed on the square in 1882 to commemorate the prince's outstanding achievements and political contributions. Republic Square is one of the busiest places in Serbia and among the most bustling central commercial districts in Belgrade. In 2000, a modern public Millennium Clock was installed on the square. In addition to functioning as a clock, it also serves as a weather forecaster, continuously updating the weather conditions. The Millennium Clock and its pedestal are made of chrome steel and glass, forming a sharp contrast with the square’s other historic buildings.
