Petrovaradin Fortress

Petrovaradin Fortress is located on the right bank of the Danube River in Novi Sad, Vojvodina Province, covering an area of 112 hectares, and is one of Europe’s most famous military fortresses. The fortress construction began in 1692 and was not completed until 1780, taking over a century, with many underground tunnels. During the Austro-Hungarian Empire era, large-scale defensive fortifications were built, making it one of the most magnificent military structures in European history.

Historically, the fortress has been owned by Celts, Romans, Byzantines, Hungarians, Turks, and Austrians. During World War I, Petrovaradin Fortress became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and was used as storage facilities and barracks. Today, Petrovaradin Fortress has become an art center and tourist attraction, frequently hosting various style art exhibitions, concerts, and art festivals. From the fortress, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Novi Sad city and the picturesque scenery of the Danube River.
