Wooden Town

Wooden Town is a small town located near the northern part of the Zlatibor Mountains in Serbia. In English, Mokra Gora means "wet mountain." The formation of Wooden Town was due to the construction of a town by a famous Serbian director for the needs of a film. This town, from the ground to the buildings, is entirely built of wood. The wooden houses date back a hundred years, representing early Serbian residential architecture, mostly constructed with wooden frames.

Some of these wooden houses served as main residences, others as granaries or livestock sheds. Among them, some even have slate roofs. Slate roofing is not only durable but also resistant to rot and fire, which is why these wooden houses have withstood a century of wind and rain and still stand today. Nowadays, these century-old wooden houses in Wooden Town have become a renowned attraction, drawing many visitors. Wooden Town is also famous for having the world’s only narrow-gauge railway, the Sargan 8. It is named so because, when viewed from above, the route of the narrow-gauge railway resembles the number 8, winding and twisting through the landscape.
