Ada Ciganlija, commonly referred to as Ada, is a river island located in the heart of Belgrade, Serbia. It has been artificially transformed into an urban peninsula along the Sava River as it flows through the city. When people mention Ada Island, they usually refer not only to the island itself but also to the nearby Sava Lake and beaches.

Due to its central location in Belgrade, Ada Island is very accessible. In the past, it served as an execution site for prisoners, and the swampy terrain deterred visitors. As Belgrade prospered, the area was gradually transformed into a popular recreational destination. Its beaches and sports facilities are its biggest draws, offering nearly every imaginable athletic amenity — making it a dream spot for sports enthusiasts. Especially during summer weekends, the island attracts an estimated 100,000 to 300,000 visitors daily. Because of its immense popularity, locals have nicknamed it “More Beograda” (Belgrade Sea), a moniker that was even used as the slogan for Belgrade’s 2008 advertising campaign: “More BeogrADA.”
