Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art is located in Belgrade, Serbia. Established as the Museum of Modern Art in 1958, it primarily collects, preserves, and exhibits artworks from Serbia and Yugoslavia created from 1900 to the present. It is the most important art museum in Serbia.

The building that houses the Museum of Contemporary Art was designed by the best architects of post-war Yugoslavia. The museum’s permanent collection contains up to 35,000 items, which can be categorized by era into paintings from 1900 to 1945, paintings from after 1945, sculptures, prints, and new media art (photographs, films, and videos). The collection of paintings from 1900 to 1945 includes over 900 artworks by 138 artists, among which are more than 120 watercolors, pastels, and gouaches. The collection of paintings from after 1945 features 2,045 artworks from Serbia and Yugoslavia, each a masterpiece in its own right. The sculpture collection is one of the museum’s most significant, comprising 752 sculptures created by Serbian and Yugoslav artists from the 20th century to the present.
