Niš

Niš is the capital of Serbia's Nišava District, the third-largest city in the country after the capital Belgrade and Novi Sad, as well as the largest city in southern Serbia. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and the Balkans, historically regarded as a key passage connecting the Eastern and Western worlds, and today is one of Serbia's most vital industrial and educational centers.

As an ancient city with a long history, Niš boasts numerous historical landmarks and sites, making it a great destination for history enthusiasts. Mediana is a Roman-era estate; the Niš Fortress is the best-preserved Turkish castle in central the Balkans, built in 1723, with the remains of the ancient Roman city lying beneath it. The Ćele Kula Monument marks the site where Governor Stevan Sinđelić and his soldiers fought a bloody battle against the Turks; the Niš Liberation Monument, erected in 1937, commemorates the heroes who sacrificed their lives for Niš’s liberation. The "Red Cross" concentration camp was a Nazi German camp; the Bubanj Memorial Park is the site of one of the largest mass graves from World War II.
