Boyana Church

Boyana Church is hailed as the "Pearl of Sofia's Crown" and is a renowned Eastern Orthodox church in Bulgaria. It is located about 8,000 meters south of Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, in the village of Boyana at the foothills of Vitosha Mountain in the southern suburbs of Sofia.

Boyana Church is made up of three churches. Although they were constructed in different eras and feature distinct architectural styles, together they form a harmonious architectural ensemble. All three churches have a square floor plan with a central dome, and their exteriors are richly decorated. The two oldest churches are further adorned with ceramic tilework.

The most famous features of Boyana Church are its frescoes, particularly “The Last Supper” and the icon paintings. The facial expressions of the figures in the frescoes—including those of saints, Tsar Kaloyan, and members of the royal family—are remarkably vivid. Rather than being conventional and rigid icons, they portray individuals with distinct personalities and characteristics, exhibiting a clear sense of realism and bearing close resemblance to local folk art. These frescoes represent the most outstanding achievement of medieval Bulgarian art. Built upon the ruins left by foreign invaders, the church was once part of the royal palace during the Middle Ages and now stands as a symbol of Bulgaria’s independence, culture, and prosperity.
