Grubelnik, a Slovenian national, participated in the Winter Olympics in 1998, 2002, and 2006, achieving a 13th-place finish in 2006. In addition, he won a World Cup event in 2000 and announced his retirement in 2007. In 2013, he became the head coach of the Bulgarian national ski team.
On Tuesday, his vehicle rolled down a mountainside after a rollover incident on a mountain road in the Austrian resort of Sölden. Grubelnik succumbed to his injuries at the age of 39. The Bulgarian Ski Association announced the news. Bulgarian skier Popov and assistant coach Dimitar were also injured in the crash and were hospitalized for treatment.
“The Bulgarian Ski Association extends its deepest condolences to the family of Grubelnik. We also wish Popov and Dimitar a speedy recovery,” the association stated. (Sina Sports)
