China has been the world’s top outbound tourist source market for two consecutive years. Despite showing “double-high” figures in both volume and growth rate, a survey conducted by Skyscanner on travel planning cycles reveals that China’s outbound tourism market is still in its initial development stage, which is in line with the country’s national conditions, and is characterized by a gradual shift from experimental to mature.
The global leading travel search platform Skyscanner (www.tianxun.com) recently found that mainland Chinese outbound travelers plan their trips an average of 40 days in advance, nearly three weeks less than the global average of 59 days, and even more than a week less than the Vietnamese average of 48 days. This means Chinese travelers tend to arrange their trips more hastily. Although previous surveys have shown that 40% of Chinese people include travel in their holiday spending and outbound travel expenditure is growing rapidly, the habit of regularly planning outbound trips with adequate preparation still needs to be cultivated.
In addition, Skyscanner found that Malaysians are the earliest to start planning their outbound trips among the surveyed travelers. They begin preparations 79 days (about 11 weeks) before departure, while travelers from Taiwan also plan their trips 77 days in advance. Travelers from Hong Kong prepare 66 days ahead, surpassing those from South Korea, Japan, and Singapore, indicating a more mature travel habit.
