Rila National Park

Rila National Park was established on February 24, 1992, and is located about 100 kilometers south of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Covering an area of 81,046 hectares and reaching an altitude of 2,925 meters, it is the largest national park in Bulgaria.

The park was mainly established to preserve its rare plant and animal life, the pristine natural ecosystem of the Rila Mountains, and the Rila Monastery—the largest and most significant monastery in Bulgaria. The highest peak of the Rila Mountains, Musala Peak, stands at 2,925 meters above sea level, making it not only the tallest in Bulgaria but also across the entire Balkan Peninsula. It ranks as the sixth highest mountain in Europe after the Caucasus, the Alps, the Sierra Nevada in Spain, the Pyrenees, and Mount Etna. The mountain range is rich in glacial lakes and hot springs. The Rila Monastery, built in the mid-10th century in the Neo-Byzantine style, consists of 11 churches constructed in different periods, 20 residential buildings from the 14th to 19th centuries, defensive towers, and a semi-circular four-story tower. In addition to its grand scale, the monastery houses priceless artistic works such as murals, religious icons, and a collection of 600 artifacts, and has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
