Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is located in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, and serves as the main cathedral of the Bulgarian Patriarchate. It was constructed between 1904 and 1912 and is named after Russian Tsar Alexander II, primarily built to commemorate the Russian army's "liberation" of Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral, covering an area of 3,170 square meters and capable of accommodating 10,000 people simultaneously. It is the largest Eastern Orthodox church in the world and the second-largest on the Balkan Peninsula. The cathedral follows the Neo-Byzantine architectural style and features a basilica layout—a form of ancient Roman public building characterized by a rectangular floor plan, an outer colonnade, main entrances along the long sides, side chapels along the short sides, and a roof supported by barrel vaults. Its gilded dome stands 45 meters high, and the bell tower reaches 53 meters, making them visible from various parts of Sofia. In addition, the cathedral houses 12 bells with a total weight of 23 tons; the heaviest weighs 12 tons, and the lightest just 10 kilograms. The nave is adorned with Italian marble of various colors, Brazilian onyx, white marble, and other luxurious materials. The architecture is lavish and exquisite, making it one of Sofia’s most famous landmarks and one of the most beautiful churches in the world.
