Sofia Zoo

Established in May 1888, Sofia Zoo is the oldest zoo in the Balkan Peninsula. It was originally located in the city center of Sofia, but as the number and variety of animals increased along with the zoo's expansion, it was relocated to a site about 4.5 km south of Sofia in 1982. Between 1893 and 1895, the zoo added a number of new enclosures and built new “homes” for many birds, mammals, and other animals, striving to provide them with more comfortable living conditions.

Today, Sofia Zoo spans 36 hectares and is home to 1,113 animals of 244 species, making it the largest and oldest zoo in Bulgaria. Visitors can observe 20 species of herbivores, including white rhinoceroses, hippos, elephants, zebras, spiral-horned antelopes, and American bison, as well as large predators such as lions, tigers, leopards, and brown bears. There are also 12 species of primates and 60 species of birds—totaling 500 individuals—including waterfowl and other avian species.

Combining entertainment with education on wildlife conservation, Sofia Zoo not only offers an engaging visit but also teaches visitors valuable lessons about animal protection, making it especially popular among children.
