Seven Altars Monastery

The Seven Altars Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox monastery under the Sofia Metropolitanate, located at the foot of Izdremets Peak in the western Balkan Mountains, at the border junction of Sofia Province and Vratsa Province, just 86 kilometers from the capital city of Sofia. It is one of the famous sites among Bulgaria’s 100 best tourist attractions.

The Seven Altars Monastery is world-renowned for its unique seven altars, which experts say is the only monastery of its kind in Bulgaria. Legend has it that during the Ottoman Age, there was once a monastery on the site of the current Seven Altars Monastery, but it was unfortunately destroyed in a fire. Seven governors at the time rebuilt a new monastery, and to honor them, the monastery was specially designed with seven altars—this is how the Seven Altars Monastery came to be. To the north of the monastery lies the ruins of a fortress, locally known as the "Latin Stronghold." It is said that the monastery’s gate was built using materials from these ruins. Travelers can view these remains along the rugged road leading to the monastery.
