National Palace of Culture

The National Palace of Culture is located in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Officially put into use and opened to the public in 1981, it is a multi-functional building that hosts the parliament, concerts, and international exhibitions. Its state-of-the-art technical equipment meets the requirements for hosting large-scale international events such as concerts, conferences, and exhibitions. In 2005, the palace was named the best congress center in the world by the International Organization of Congress Centres.

The construction of the National Palace of Culture originated from an idea by Lyudmila Zhivkova, the former First Lady of Bulgaria. The main structure was completed by both domestic and international architectural teams, while the landscape on Bulgaria Square (Bulgaria Square) in front of the palace was designed by other architecture teams and professional landscape designers. The entire complex covers a total floor area of 123,000 square meters, has 11 floors (8 above ground and 3 underground), and includes 13 halls, 15,000 square meters of exhibition space, a trade center, and a parking lot. It used 10,000 tons of steel—3,000 tons more than the Eiffel Tower—making it one of Bulgaria’s most magnificent buildings.
