The Rila Mountains are situated in southwestern Bulgaria and are an uplifted block composed of ancient crystalline and granite rocks. Owing to significant erosion, the area features steep cliffs and ridges above the valleys. The highest peak, Musala, stands at 2,925 meters, making it the highest mountain in Bulgaria and the entire Balkan Peninsula, as well as the sixth highest in Europe, following the Caucasus, the Alps, the Sierra Nevada in Spain, the Pyrenees, and Mount Etna.

Covering an area of 2,400 square kilometers, the Rila Mountains are home to numerous glacial lakes and hot springs. Several major rivers of the Balkan Peninsula, including the Maritsa, Iskar, and Mesta, originate here. It is said that the name "Rila" comes from the Thracian language, meaning "mountain of many waters." The region has a typical mountain climate, with abundant precipitation and low temperatures. Snow covers the higher altitudes year-round, and the mountains are widely forested with coniferous trees such as fir, spruce, European red pine, and black pine.

The Rila Mountains boast stunning scenery and rich biodiversity. Crystal-clear streams trickle merrily through towering ancient trees. Moreover, the mountains are home to a monastery dating back to the 10th century — the largest and most important in Bulgaria, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
