Iskar River

The Iskar River is located in western Bulgaria, stretching 368 kilometers in length and flowing through seven of the country’s provinces, making it the longest river in Bulgaria. It originates in the south from the Rila Mountains, where it is formed by the confluence of four headstreams: the White Iskar, the Black Iskar, the Cherni Iskar, and the Left Iskar. After exiting the mountains, the Iskar first flows north, passing through Bulgaria’s largest reservoir—the Iskar Reservoir—then runs east of the capital, Sofia. As it cuts through the Balkan Mountains, it forms the famous Iskar Gorge before finally turning northeast to flow into the Danube River, where it becomes a right tributary.

The Iskar River is the oldest river on the Balkan Peninsula. Despite major geological changes over the centuries, it has retained its original course, providing abundant water for irrigation along its banks.
