National Museum of Natural History, Bulgaria

The National Museum of Natural History of Bulgaria was established in 1889 and is located in the country's capital, Sofia, near the local Russian Church. The museum is affiliated with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and is the first and also the largest natural history museum on the Balkan Peninsula.

Originally established as the Natural History Museum of Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, it became part of the Institute of Zoology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1947. Prior to that, numerous domestic and international experts served as museum directors. Today, the museum houses over 400 lifelike mammal specimens, more than 1,200 species of birds, thousands of insects and other invertebrates, as well as around a quarter of the world’s mineral samples. Its exhibitions are extensive, primarily divided into nine major sections: recent mammal fossils, recent bird fossils, fishes, amphibians and reptiles, insects, non-insect invertebrates, invertebrate fossils, minerals and rocks, and plants.
