Minsk

The capital of the Republic of Belarus, located on the Svislach River (a tributary of the Dnieper). It has a history of 935 years to date. The earliest historical record of Minsk dates back to 1067. In the early 14th century, Minsk was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and became the center of the Minsk Province after being annexed by Russia in 1793. In January 1, 1919, the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic was established with Minsk as its capital. During World War II, Minsk fell on June 28, 1941. The German fascists killed over 400,000 people in Minsk and its surrounding areas. Eighty percent of Minsk's housing and nearly all factories, power stations, research institutions, and theaters were destroyed. The Soviet Red Army liberated Minsk on July 3, 1944.
