Neman River
The Neman River (Lithuanian: Nemunas; Russian: Неман; Belarusian: Нёман; Polish: Niemen; German: Memel) originates in the mountainous regions of Belarus (southwest of Minsk), flowing through Belarus, Lithuania, and Russia, with a total length of 937 kilometers, and finally empties into the Baltic Sea at Klaipėda. In Russian, the word "немец" (German) literally means "Neman River person," as during the Middle Ages, Germans once occupied this area. Before World War II, the Neman River marked the eastern boundary of German-speaking regions—for example, the first stanza of the German national anthem includes the line describing the territories of the German nation at that time: "&……
