Minsk Victory Square

Victory Square is situated in the heart of Minsk and was constructed in 1947, stretching 225 meters long and 175 meters wide. The square is dominated by the Monument to the Fallen in the Great Patriotic War, which rises 40 meters high. The base of the monument features large metal bas-reliefs on all four sides, illustrating the brave resistance of Belarusians during the war. At the top of the monument is a five-pointed star symbolizing the heroic city, and in front of the monument burns an eternal flame that represents the immortal spirit of the fallen.

Neatly arranged stone tablets on both sides of Victory Square bear the names of 12 Soviet hero cities. Beneath the square lies a spacious pedestrian underpass, at the center of which stands a 2-meter-diameter amber wreath equipped with lighting. When illuminated, the wreath resembles a blazing flame, serving as a reminder to passersby of the martyrs who sacrificed gloriously for victory. Today, Victory Square has become one of the main venues in Belarus for holding significant commemorative events. On major holidays such as Victory Day (May 9) and Independence Day, Belarus holds solemn flower-laying ceremonies here. When foreign leaders visit, they typically lay wreaths at the Monument to the Fallen.
