Curonian Spit

The Curonian Spit is a sandbar located along the Baltic Sea coast, separating the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. It stretches 98 kilometers in length, with a maximum width of 4 kilometers and a minimum width of just 400 meters. Since ancient times, it has been threatened by natural forces such as sea winds and tides, but generation after generation of people have fought against the erosion of the spit through continuous afforestation and sand stabilization projects, allowing the site to survive to this day.

The Curonian Spit preserves numerous historical, archaeological, architectural, and other cultural relics in their entirety, along with traditional and rustic ways of life. Today, it has almost become Lithuania’s summer holiday paradise. Due to its unique geographical location, it is often subjected to the ravages of sea winds and tides. To combat these threats, the island’s residents have planted trees generation after generation with unwavering determination, which explains why the forest coverage on the spit now exceeds 70%. This environment also produces high-quality amber, and it is said that this region accounts for over 90% of the world’s amber reserves, making it a true kingdom of amber.
