Kernavė Archaeological Site
The Kernavė Archaeological Site is located in eastern Lithuania, about 35 km northwest of Vilnius, and is an outstanding example of approximately 10,000 years of human settlement in the region. The site complex lies in the Neris River valley and includes the town of Kernavė, fortresses, some unfortified settlements, burial sites, and other archaeological, historical, and cultural remains from the late Paleolithic period to the Middle Ages.
Covering an area of 194.4 hectares, the Kernavė Archaeological Site preserves traces of ancient land use, as well as remnants of five hill forts (part of a large defensive system). Kernavė was an important feudal town during the Middle Ages. Although the town suffered damage from the Teutonic Order in the late 14th century, it remained in use until modern times.
