Gediminas Tower

Gediminas Tower is located in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, and it is the only remaining part of the Upper Castle of Vilnius. The first defensive structure here was made of wood and was ordered to be built by Duke Gediminas of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which is also the origin of the tower’s name. The subsequent brick castle was completed in 1409 under the orders of Vytautas, one of the most renowned rulers of medieval Lithuania.

Gediminas Tower is an important historical symbol of both the city of Vilnius and the entire country of Lithuania. It appears on Lithuanian currency and is featured in many patriotic poems and folk songs of Lithuania. During the independence movement that culminated in the declaration of Lithuanian independence on March 11, 1990, the Lithuanian flag was once again raised at the top of the tower on October 7, 1988. The reconstructed Lithuanian Royal Palace was completed in 2009 at the foot of the hill where Gediminas Tower stands.

Some remnants of the old Gediminas Castle have been reconstructed based on archaeological research. Visitors can reach the mountaintop where Gediminas Tower is located either by hiking or by taking a funicular. Inside the tower, some archaeological finds from the area and its surroundings are displayed. Additionally, the site offers stunning views of the Old Town of Vilnius.
