Lithuania Zoo

The Lithuania Zoo was formerly known as the Kaunas Zoo. Located in Kaunas, the second-largest city in Lithuania, it is the country’s only zoo, covering an area of 15.9 hectares. The Kaunas Zoo was initially launched by zoologist Tadas Ivanauskas in 1935 and officially opened on July 1, 1938, with just 40 animals at the time. The number grew to 150 within the following year. It was officially renamed the Lithuania Zoo on December 4, 1958.

Today, the Lithuania Zoo is situated in the center of Kaunas and is home to many centuries-old oak trees. The zoo is divided into 11 different zones and employs around 130 staff members. In terms of land area and the total number of animals, the Lithuania Zoo can be considered a medium-sized zoo in Europe. As of 2009, the Kaunas Zoo housed over 2,800 species of insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, attracting numerous visitors year-round.
