Palanga Amber Museum

The Palanga Amber Museum is located in the famous seaside city of Palanga, Lithuania, and is a branch of the Lithuanian Art Museum. It is housed in the 19th-century reconstructed Tiškevičiai Palace, surrounded by the beautiful Palanga Botanical Garden. The museum is the largest of many amber museums in the Baltic region, with a collection of approximately 28,000 pieces of amber, of which 15,000 contain insects, spiders, or plants. About 4,500 pieces are on display, most of which are artworks and amber jewelry.

The exhibition area of the Palanga Amber Museum covers 750 square meters, including 15 rooms. In addition, the chapel connected to the Tiškevičiai Palace serves as a temporary exhibition space. The amber exhibits in the museum are mainly divided into two major categories: scientific and cultural-artistic amber. The first-floor exhibits primarily showcase the formation process of amber—in fact, most Baltic amber was formed from resin dating back 40 to 45 million years ago. The museum houses the third-largest amber specimen in Europe, the “Sun Stone,” weighing 3.5 kilograms.

The cultural and artistic amber in the Palanga Amber Museum mainly includes rings from the 15th century, crosses from the 16th century, amber jewelry from the past four centuries, as well as items such as prayer beads, cigarette holders, and decorative boxes. In addition, the museum also has collections of amber from other parts of the world and a selection of modern amber artifacts.
