Šiauliai

Šiauliai is the capital of Šiauliai County and the fourth-largest city in Lithuania. It is also one of Lithuania’s key industrial, commercial, transportation, and cultural hubs.

The city’s most famous attraction is the Hill of Crosses, located 12 kilometers north of Šiauliai. This small hill is covered with tens of thousands of crosses that represent Lithuania’s moving history, as well as large crucifixes, sculptures of Lithuanian patriots, statues of the Virgin Mary, and thousands of smaller figurines. The towering Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, despite suffering damage in wars, has been restored each time to appear before the world with its white façade, tall spires, and red-tiled roof. On its southern side is one of Lithuania’s oldest sundials—one of only a few in its kind that can display the exact local time.

Other highlights worth careful appreciation include the tall gilded statue of a boy, the shimmering waters of Lake Šiauliai, the fun Cat Museum, the educational Bicycle Museum, and the iron fox sculpture symbolizing wisdom.
