Attraction Introduction The domed church—St. Mary's Cathedral—is a cathedral. This famous historic landmark has become a symbol of the ancient town of Riga. It has been rebuilt several times over the past centuries, so the current building incorporates many architectural elements from different styles. Bishop Albert began constructing a new cathedral and monastery in 1211, and the first phase of construction was completed in 1270. The spire of the dome church was once the tallest in the city, standing at 140 meters. After its reconstruction in 1776, the spire was redesigned to its current form, now 90 meters high. The cathedral’s famous organ, built in 1884, was the largest in the world at that time, with 6,718 pipes.
