Freedom Monument

The Freedom Monument is located in Riga, the capital of Latvia. It was built to commemorate the soldiers who died during Latvia's War of Independence (1918–1920) and stands as an important symbol of Latvia’s freedom, independence, and sovereignty. The monument was unveiled in 1935, constructed from granite, travertine, and copper, and stands 42 meters tall. Its carvings depict Latvian culture and history.

This monument is situated at the boundary between Riga’s Old Town and New Town. It was created by a renowned Latvian sculptor. The structure consists of several parts, each representing different meanings: labor, national strength, spiritual power, and freedom. The lowest reliefs portray historical events, while the top features a female figure symbolizing liberty, holding three golden stars above her head, facing west. These stars represent Latvia’s three historical and cultural regions: Vidzeme, Latgale, and Kurzeme. The inscription reads “For Fatherland and Freedom.” The square in front of the Freedom Monument is a main venue for public and official ceremonies in Riga.
