Museum of the Occupation of Latvia

The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is a historical educational institution located in Riga, the capital of Latvia. Established in 1993, it displays artifacts and archival documents related to a 51-year period during the 20th century: Latvia’s occupation by the Soviet Union in 1940, followed by Nazi Germany in 1941, and then again by the Soviet Union in 1944.

The explicit mission of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is to present what happened in Latvia, whose land and people were under the occupation of two totalitarian regimes from 1940 to 1991; to remember the crimes committed against the Latvian state and people by foreign powers; and to remember the victims of the occupation — those who perished, suffered, were forcibly deported, or fled the terror of the occupying regimes. High-level state visits to Latvia often include an official tour of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia.
