Riga St. Peter's Church (St. Peter's Church, Riga) is a towering church in the Latvian capital of Riga, standing at 123 meters high (136 meters before the war). It was originally built in 1209 and expanded in the early 15th century by stonemasons from Rostock. The current bell tower was completed in 1746 and has been struck by lightning several times in history, causing collapses twice (in 1666 and 1721). Before World War II, it was the tallest wooden building in Europe. During the war, the roof and bell tower were destroyed in a fire. In the 1970s, Soviet engineers rebuilt the church and installed an elevator, allowing visitors to enjoy views of Riga from a height of 70 meters.

Riga St. Peter's Church is a typical example of Gothic architecture. Both the walls and the tower grow more slender and ornate as they rise, each topped with a sharp spire that pierces the sky. It is the highest point in the Old Town. The entire church exudes a powerful upward thrust, symbolizing the religious ideal of the Church’s transcendence of worldly concerns. At the top of the church sits a cast-iron rooster, with one side golden and the other black. This rooster, also known as a weather vane, indicates wind direction — when the golden side faces the city, it signifies favorable winds and ships can enter the harbor; when the black side faces the city, it means contrary winds, and ships should not enter. Locally, the rooster is also believed to ward off evil spirits. Its crowing three times heralds the dawn, when devils must return to hell, making it a symbol of good fortune in the area.
