Latvian National Opera

The Latvian National Opera is one of the most remarkable achievements in Latvia’s architectural and cultural history. Built in 1918, it has infused new life into classical music and become one of the most renowned cultural centers. With its exquisite design, classic elegance, and particularly innovative stage setup, the opera house brings world-class conductors, singers, and other distinguished guests from afar to Riga.

The predecessor of the Latvian National Opera was a neoclassical-style building constructed in 1863 by St. Petersburg architect Ludwig Bohnstedt. It originally served as the German City Theatre. Over the following century, it underwent several renovations—in the periods 1882–1887, 1957–1958, and 1991–1995. In 2001, a modern concert hall with a capacity of 300 seats was added. Nowadays, during its performance season from September to May each year, the opera house stages an average of 200 operas and ballets, consistently attracting a large number of music enthusiasts and tourists.
