Riga Zoo

Riga Zoo is a zoo owned by the city of Riga, Latvia, located on the western shore of Lake Ķīšezers. Established on October 14, 1912, the zoo spans an area of 46.4 hectares and is home to approximately 500 species and 3,000 animals, attracting around 300,000 visitors annually.

Riga Zoo is a large-scale and well-developed zoo in Latvia. In November 1992, it became a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. On December 22 of the same year, the Council of the Republic of Latvia granted Riga Zoo national park status. In 1993, to protect and increase the population of the Tibetan wild ass, Riga Zoo established the Cīruli branch, further enriching the variety of animals in the zoo.

The tropical zoo at Riga Zoo houses over 80 species of tropical animals and opens to visitors on May 25th each year. It mainly features amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates, and nocturnal animals. In addition, the zoo also includes widely known animals such as elephants, camels, tigers, giraffes, bears, turtles, and flamingos. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited the zoo in October 2008, further increasing its global recognition.
