Riga Aviation Museum

The Riga Aviation Museum was established in 1956 by Viktor Talpa, who once worked at the Latvian Civil Aviation Administration. For various reasons, the museum was not officially opened to the public until 1997. The museum is located just 100 meters from Riga International Airport. Most of the aircraft exhibits are displayed outdoors, allowing visitors to closely examine the planes’ various parts and components.

The outdoor aviation museum in Riga is an important repository of Soviet military heritage. It is one of Europe’s largest collections of Soviet aircraft and the only such collection in the Baltic states. Its exhibits primarily include civil, military, and passenger aircraft, helicopters, radar systems, engines, rocket models, bombs, pistols, ejection seats, and other types of military equipment—totaling around 40 unique multi-purpose aircraft. Although maintaining such a large collection of aviation artifacts requires considerable upkeep, preserving so much of the Soviet aviation legacy is well worth the effort and is highly popular with visitors.
