Latvian National History Museum

The Latvian National History Museum is located in Riga, the capital of Latvia, and was established in 1869. Starting in 1920, the museum has been housed in Riga Castle. Since 1924, it has officially functioned as the national history museum. Its primary mission is to “collect, preserve, research, and promote knowledge about the spiritual and material culture of Latvia and the world from ancient times to the present, covering areas such as archaeology, ethnography, numismatics, items of historical or artistic significance, and topics related to the interests of the Latvian nation and people.”

The Latvian National History Museum is the largest repository of Latvian material culture, housing around one million artifacts related to Latvian history from approximately 9000 BC to the present day. Its collections are mainly divided into five major categories, including items from archaeological excavations, antique jewelry and coins, national costumes, traditional tools, applied arts, photographs, documents, maps, sculptures, paintings, and other Latvian historical relics.

The permanent exhibition at the Latvian National History Museum primarily displays historical artifacts reflecting Latvia’s history up to 1940. A number of individual exhibitions offer more specific insights into particular themes in Latvian history. The museum also hosts four to five temporary exhibitions each year, which are very popular with visitors.
