Riga Central Market is not only the largest market in Latvia’s capital, Riga, but also the largest market in Europe. It is one of the most iconic buildings of 20th-century Latvia and, in 1998, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Old Town of Riga. It’s a must-visit destination for travelers to Riga, as it offers an in-depth look into the daily lives of the locals.

Riga Central Market is conveniently located in the city center, just a short walk from the Old Town of Riga, on the banks of the Daugava River, near the Riga Bus Station and the Central Railway Station. The plan to build the market began in 1922, with construction starting in 1924 and completed in 1930. The main structure consists of five repurposed German Zeppelin hangars, redesigned with neoclassical and Art Deco elements. The market covers an area of 72,300 square meters and houses approximately 3,000 stalls.

The market offers an incredibly wide range of fresh goods—from fruits and vegetables to poultry, fish, meat, cheese, honey, kitchenware, hardware, and more. Practically everything you need for daily life can be found here. Many of the stalls seem to be “inherited” through generations, with vending here considered a respected profession passed down within families.
