Monument to the Discoveries

Attraction Introduction

The monument is located not far from Belém Tower, standing on a square by the sea. With its imposing presence, it has become a symbol of Portugal. Built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator, it is shaped like a ship with its sails unfurled. The monument features statues of Henry and 80 other sailors, with Henry himself standing at the bow, followed by his assistant, Caminha. On either side are other navigators who set out with him, as well as famous Portuguese generals, missionaries, and scientists from history. The grand design commemorates Portugal’s glorious 300-year history of maritime exploration.

Visitors can climb to the top of the monument for a view of the surrounding scenery and the harbor, which is particularly bright and beautiful. On the ground in front of the monument is an engraved world map marking the dates of the discovery of new lands.
