Calling 25,000 people! Taiwan challenges the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest “Picnic Day”

The international trend of outdoor “mass picnic days” has made its way to Taiwan. The first-ever Picnic Day will take place on May 11 at the Indigenous Themed Tribal Park in Shulin District, New Taipei City. Organizers expect to gather 24,000 participants, aiming to break the record of over 22,000 people picnicking simultaneously, which was set in 2009 at Lisbon’s Bela Vista Park in Portugal.

Following the 2013 picnic day organized by a travel channel in Taipei, the inaugural Taiwan Picnic Day, initiated by “Attack of the Cornstarch,” is also joining the movement. Notably, the organizers aim to set a new Guinness World Record through this mass picnic. Currently, Lisbon, Portugal, not only holds the record for the largest number of people picnicking together but also boasts the records for “the world’s largest trash can” and “the loudest applause.”Attack of the CornstarchThe first-ever Taiwan Picnic Day, initiated by "发起的首届台湾野餐日," is also set to take place. Notably, the organizers aim to challenge the Guinness World Records through this massive picnic involving ten thousand participants. Currently, Lisbon, Portugal, not only holds the record for the largest number of people at a picnic but also holds the records for "the world’s largest trash can" and "the loudest applause."

Organizers explained that according to Guinness World Record guidelines, participation requires registration, and essential criteria include “two types of food and one type of drink,” “tickets,” and “picnic mats or tables.” As such, a registration fee of NT$250 per person will be charged, which includes a simple meal, a commemorative version of an EasyCard, and a participation certificate.

Organizers also reminded the public that, per Guinness guidelines, participants must have countable items such as barcoded tickets or wristbands. Therefore, regardless of age, registration is required to be included in the official count. However, this is not mandatory for attending the picnic day—people can choose whether or not to register, and those who do not register are still welcome to join in the fun.
