Cape Roca is a cape on the Atlantic Ocean in Portugal, located at the westernmost point of the country and also the westernmost point of the entire Eurasian continent. It lies at 38°47′N latitude and 9°30′W longitude within Portugal’s Lisbon District, about 42 kilometers west of Lisbon and 18 kilometers west of the town of Sintra. A lighthouse and a cross facing the ocean have been built on the 140-meter-high cliffs of Cape Roca. The monument bears a famous Portuguese inscription: “Onde a terra acaba e o mar começa” (Here, the land ends and the sea begins).

Cape Roca has been rated by netizens as one of the “50 places most worth visiting in the world.” There is indeed something unique about Cape Roca—it is so rugged that standing on the cliff’s edge might make you feel as though you could be pushed off at any moment, with the unshielded wind acting as the most suspicious assassin. Then there are the waves that look calm from afar but surge passionately as you approach, shattering like emeralds and bringing to mind the integrity of choosing “to be shattered jade rather than unbroken pottery.” Additionally, you can witness the magnificent sunrise over the sea here. It takes just an hour and a half to drive from Lisbon along the coast to reach Cape Roca.
