Avenida da Liberdade

Avenida da Liberdade is a major street in the city center of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. It is a tree-lined boulevard 90 meters wide with 10 lanes and gardens, stretching between Restauradores Square and Marquês de Pombal Square at either end. With its scenic beauty, hotels, shops, theaters, and architectural landmarks, the avenue has become an important tourist attraction in the city.

After much discussion and debate, the avenue was built between 1879 and 1886, modeled after the boulevards of Paris. Its creation marked a milestone in the city’s northward expansion and quickly became a preferred residential area for the upper class. Over recent decades, many of the original buildings along the avenue have been replaced by high-rise office blocks and hotels. Today, it features several interesting buildings that reflect Portuguese architecture from the late 19th century to the 21st century. Its sidewalks and roundabouts are paved with traditional Portuguese calçada, decorated with numerous monuments and statues of notable figures, including Almeida Garrett, Alexandre Herculano, and others. The large World War I Monument, erected in 1931, is the work of Rebelo de Andrade and Maximiano Alves.
