Rossio Square

Rossio Square (officially Praça de D. Pedro IV) is a square in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, located in the lower town of Baixa. The square has been the site of popular uprisings and celebrations, bullfights, and executions. It is named after King Pedro IV of Portugal, who was also the first Emperor of Brazil (Pedro I). Nowadays, Rossio is a beloved gathering place for both locals and tourists, and some of its cafes and shops date back to the 18th century, such as Café Nicola.

Rossio Square is a hub of Lisbon’s transportation system, with most buses and trams passing through it. It is also a daily destination for Lisboetas. Though not very large and designed in the style of Paris's Place de la Concorde — and less grand than Praça do Comércio — it is an integral part of Lisbon life and has a uniquely warm feel. In the center of the square stands a statue of King Pedro IV, at the base of which are four small female statues representing Justice, Wisdom, Strength, and Moderation — qualities the king attributed to himself.
