Lisbon Cathedral

Lisbon Cathedral (Lisbon Cathedral) was built in 1147 and is the oldest church in Lisbon, standing on the site of a former mosque. The first archbishop of the cathedral was the Englishman Gilbert, who made significant contributions here. Over time, the cathedral underwent continuous expansions and the addition of new structures, mainly in response to the Great Lisbon Earthquake and the subsequent fires. The current size and structure of the cathedral date from the restoration work completed in 1930, incorporating a blend of various architectural styles.

The façade of Lisbon Cathedral features fortress-like bell towers on either side and a rose window with a Romanesque style. The dimly lit interior of the church is simple and unadorned, making it hard to imagine that in the early 18th century, King John V went to great lengths to transform it into an opulent place of worship. The Gothic cloister boasts beautiful double-tiered arches, and archaeologists have excavated a section of a Roman road, as well as remnants from the Visigothic period and the mosque. Additionally, the treasury exhibits silverware, bishop’s vestments, statues, manuscripts, and relics related to St. Vincent, the patron saint of Lisbon.
