National Archaeology Museum of Lisbon

The National Archaeology Museum of Lisbon is situated in the capital city of Portugal and is the nation’s most significant archaeological museum. Founded in 1893 by the celebrated archaeologist José Leite de Vasconcelos, the museum has occupied the western half of the Jerónimos Monastery since 1903. This area was formerly the monks' dormitory and was redesigned in the Neo-Manueline style in the latter half of the 19th century. The museum houses archaeological artifacts from across Portugal and is the premier institution for studying the country’s ancient history.

At the entrance of the National Archaeology Museum of Lisbon stand two granite sculptures of Lusitanian guards, dating back to around the 1st century AD in northern Portugal. The exhibits are divided into Egyptian antiquities and Portuguese archaeological treasures, featuring precious metal objects from the Bronze and Iron Ages. Additionally, the museum displays Roman mosaics collected by the Portuguese, most of which originate from southern Portugal. The National Archaeology Museum of Lisbon offers insights into human evolution from the late Paleolithic period to the Roman era through its historical relics. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum also regularly hosts special exhibitions across various fields.
