The Lisbon Oceanarium opened in 1998 and is said to be the second-largest aquarium in the world. The exterior of the Lisbon Aquarium resembles a dock at sea, giving the entire building a modern feel. The oceanarium is unique in that it breaks away from the tradition of only exhibiting fish — it houses birds, mammals, fish, and cnidarians.

The aquarium boasts a vast array of marine life, with 450 species and 16,000 creatures. It features four differently tempered exhibition halls representing the world's four major oceans — the Pacific, Indian, Atlantic, and Arctic — each with a novel and engaging theme. The Lisbon Oceanarium is one of the few aquariums in the world that houses sunfish, which require special care and conditions not commonly found in most aquariums. Other intriguing animals in the aquarium include two giant spider crabs and two sea otters, which are highly attractive and draw visitors from around the globe.

The Lisbon Oceanarium brings together marine life from around the world, as well as species rarely seen in nature, which is the main reason for its global appeal.
