Belém Palace

Belém Palace is situated on a hill in the Belém district of Lisbon, near the Praça Afonso de Albuquerque, close to the historic center of Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery. It was once the royal palace of the Portuguese monarchs and, after the establishment of the Portuguese Republic, became the official residence of the President of Portugal.

Built in 1559, Belém Palace was renovated by King João V in the 18th century. The devastating earthquake of 1755 did not cause significant damage to the palace; its tall walls and exquisite tiles were well preserved and later restored. The palace has an "L" shape and consists of a courtyard and garden complex built against the hillside, offering panoramic views of the blue sky and white clouds above, as well as the lush greenery and clear waters at the mouth of the Tagus River. In front of the palace is a small square with a vibrant garden full of blooming flowers.

Today, Belém Palace houses a Presidential Museum that collects and exhibits the history and culture of the national flag and anthem, highlighting the important role and historical significance of the presidency in Portugal. The museum features a dedicated room displaying portraits of every Portuguese president, and another showcasing various gifts presented to the president by world leaders and notable figures. It attracts numerous visitors every day.
